It’s finally summer here on Cape Cod! I don’t know about you, but I feel like I wait for this incredible season all year long! As a full time teacher, mama, and content creator, I tend to put off *certain* tasks (read: unwanted tasks) until I have more time. So, I’m finally getting around to closing these loops and hope I can encourage you to do the same. I think of them as self care because I feel SO good after I complete them!
Here are my top Mama Things To Do this summer:
1. Deep Clean
Ok, so this may not bring ALL people the same amount of joy as it brings me, but getting my house SQUEAKY clean makes me feel refreshed and ready for the season. I use a checklist I found on Pinterest to go area by area throughout my home, collecting what doesn’t belong in a laundry basket.
It takes me about 3-4 hours to do both floors on my home and when I’m done, I pour myself a glass of chilled wine and relax in my fresh space.
2. Declutter your “Monica” spaces
Remember that scene in Friends when Monica is outed for having a messy closet?
We ALL have those spaces in our homes. I’d like to think that it doesn’t start out with the intent to hoard whatever we don’t want to see in that closet, room, basement, attic, fill in the blank. I know that I tend to shove, shove, shove until summer comes and I have to face the clutter. Because I know I do this, I’ve started treating myself to professional services like Fresh Start – The Move Crew Springfield. They are commercial movers in Springfield MA but also travel as far south as the Cape! Not only will they move ALL of your furniture for you, commercial and residential (as well as pianos!), but they offer packing, storage, and junk removal!
You can always clean out your spaces yourself, but with AMAZING reviews and easy-to-access free quotes, why would you? Fresh Start is dedicated to customer service and they make sure that you feel satisfied, heard, and respected no matter if you need storage solutions, packing services, or full-service moving. And isn’t that what we all need? A fresh start for the summer?
3. Schedule your appointments
Again, this may not be the sexiest suggestion, but it’s something I put off doing ALL year long! Making sure YOU are healthy is self care, too (and necessary!). I’m talking about:
- Routine dental cleanings
- A physical and correlating blood work
- Annual pelvic exam & mammogram (depending on your age)
- Eye check up
But I also mean appointments that bring you joy! When is the last time you booked a facial, massage, or hair cut? I space ALL of these out during the year, but I make sure to schedule them in the summer months and add them to my calendar. Personally, I’ve added Botox, waxing, and microblading to my annual appointments and I THINK I might try IV therapy this summer, too!
Note: this is also a great time to check the oil light on your car!
4. Purge your kids’ closets & Toys
I like to do this more than once a year if possible. Send your kiddos away for a day so you are uninterrupted in their spaces and GO WILD. If it doesn’t fit them, isn’t in decent condition, or doesn’t get worn (Caleigh won’t wear clothes with anything written on the back as of this year [insert eye roll emoji]), DONATE it! I also sell Cal’s clothes that are in excellent condition on Poshmark. Whatever I make is funneled into her back-to-school account so we can shop later in the season.
I take a minimalist approach to toys as well (not all mamas may agree!). I find that Caleigh plays with 20% of her things 80% of the time, so I make sure to keep that 20% (Disney Princess dolls, Lego sets, craft supplies, and dress up clothes) and the rest I donate. The rule is that it has to fit in her toy box or be a part of her bedroom in an organized way; however, books are not included in this!
5. YOU time!
So, you’ve cleaned, decluttered, and purged your home. It smells great, is finally tidy, and your shameful spaces have been updated. Your calendar is sprinkled with appointments so you won’t wake up in the middle of the night this month with anxiety over something you forgot to do (and not know what that thing is).
Do you feel at peace yet?
Whatever brings you calm, it’s time to build that into your week. Whether it’s reading on the beach (or with your toes in a kiddie pool – Target has some really cute ones!), indulging in a lengthy skincare routine, or going on long runs, it makes you a BETTER you. This means it also makes you a better mama. So find your thing, whatever it may be – big or small – and block out some time for it. You deserve it.
